CCDI Employer Inclusivity Index (EII)

How inclusive is an employer? How can we actually determine the true inclusivity of a workplace versus how inclusive employers say their work environment is? How can you tell the difference?

We hear these questions frequently, and the truth is that it’s very difficult to determine. It’s often hard to differentiate between what is ‘real’ and what is just good ‘marketing’.

CCDI is excited to announce the launch of the Employer Inclusivity Index (“Index” or “EII”).

This project has been undertaken with financial support from the Government of Alberta’s Foreign Qualifications Recognition Innovation Fund.

About the Employer Inclusivity Index:

EII is intended to take the guesswork out of these questions. The Index will measure the inclusivity of an employer based on specific measureable criteria – in a pragmatic and objective manner – providing each employer with a score that reflects its true inclusivity based on leading indicators and practices.

EII scores will be derived from both quantitative and qualitative measures.

Quantitative measures include responses to a series of survey questions that each employer would be required to answer. Affirmative answers would be scored, based on priority. For example, “Does your organization have a diversity council?” may provide five points.

Where appropriate, we would require documentation to support these responses. For example, if the answer to the question “Do you have a diversity strategy?” is yes, the employer would be required to upload a confidential copy of the strategy to a secure database for confirmation and review. All submitted documentation will be anonymously reviewed by a panel of leading subject matter experts to determine how effective the documentation is. A variable score will be provided for these documents and added to the organization’s cumulative score.

This would provide the quantitative score for the employer. The organization would receive a score out of a possible 100%, which would articulate the organization’s inclusivity ‘on paper’, based on leading indicators in the area of diversity and inclusion. These leading indicators have been derived from the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks Report.

Qualitative measures will be derived by surveying a sample of the organization’s employees to assess the employee’s overall awareness and understanding of the organization’s inclusivity.

The goal of this short survey is to determine how effective an employer’s actions have been in creating a truly inclusive workplace. The objective is to compare ‘intention’ to ‘action’. For example, a large national bank may have a diversity council chaired by their CEO, yet a teller in a small branch of that bank in Cold Lake, Alberta may not be aware of that, and worse, may be finding the work environment less inclusive than desired (by both the individual and employer). This is an example of a disconnect, and shows the importance of the qualitative measurement in determining an employer’s overall inclusivity score.

The qualitative score will be added to the quantitative score to provide an overall score. The resulting deliverable will be that each employer receives a report outlining their score, why it is what it is, and what they can do to improve the inclusivity of the organization going forward.

Timeline:

The Index is currently in its initial development phase. Over the summer of 2015, it will be piloted with one employer in Alberta. It will then be assessed and adjusted according to the experiences and results of the first pilot. This will be followed by a second pilot with 20-25 Alberta-based employers in the fall of 2015.

EII will be widely available to employers in early 2016.
