Lauri Hoeg

Anishinaabe Artist and Cultural Advisor

Lauri is a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation where she lives and creates in her studio on the water called Eagles in the East producing woodland styled art pieces. Her art has been created to teach and support land acknowledgements, equity and inclusion work, storytelling, and Indigenous ways of knowing and can be seen in organizations across York Region. 

In her professional life, Lauri has dedicated many years to various leadership roles serving the First Nation community in the areas of governance, education, and culture revitalization. During this time, she advanced Georgina Island to become self-governing in education, managing their own services, and building their own school. She also held a seat on band council for four terms, during the historical Williams Treaty settlement. 

Lauri is currently serving as the Indigenous Trustee for the York Region School Board, where she works to advance equity in public education for all Indigenous students. 

Recently, Lauri joined the Municipality of York Region as Lead, Indigenous Relations Advisor to build and strengthen Indigenous awareness and inclusion, with a particular focus on advancing the Truth and Reconciliation report’s Calls to Action. 

Lauri has a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in Public Administration and Governance from the Toronto Metropolitan University, Intensive Human Rights Training from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, Indigenous Trauma Informed Counselling from the Rowe Institute and an Indigenous Public Administration and Governance Certificate from the University of Victoria.  

Lauri is Nokomis (grandmother) to Bear and a doggy mom to two golden doodles.
