The Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) reaffirms its opposition to the new legislative measures introduced by the Government of Alberta, which target the rights, dignity, and well-being of transgender and non-binary individuals. These bills— the Education Amendment Act, the Health Statutes Amendment Act, and the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act—represent a serious step back in human rights, erecting unnecessary barriers for those under 18 seeking gender-affirming care, identity recognition, and inclusive participation in sports.
These are not merely policy changes; they are infringements on fundamental human rights. Canada’s legal protections prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, yet Alberta’s legislation disregards these safeguards, placing vulnerable youth at even greater risk. Transgender and non-binary youth already face severe mental health challenges, with data showing they are five times more likely to consider suicide and over seven times more likely to attempt it than their cisgender peers. Nearly 30% of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals report their mental health as fair or poor, compared to only 9.1% among non-2SLGBTQIA+ individuals—a disparity that demands supportive, inclusive policies, not restrictive ones.
CCDI calls upon allies and all relevant parties to take an active stand against these regressive measures. We strongly urge the public to review the bills in detail, advocate for inclusive policies, and support organizations like Egale Canada, Momentum, and TransAction Alberta, which are leading the fight to protect the rights of transgender and non-binary Canadians.
To the transgender and non-binary community: we see you, we stand with you, and we will continue working tirelessly for a Canada where you can live with dignity, equality, and respect. Our mission at CCDI remains steadfast: fostering an inclusive society that values every dimension of diversity.
